John Lehmann’s magazine New Writing, launched in 1936, may be said to give literary historians a slow-motion image of the evolution of artistic consciousness in one of the most turbulent periods of the twentieth century. Throughout the fourteen years of its existence, encompassing the Spanish Civil War and the Second World War, the magazine covers a neglected period of transition in the evolution of modernism.
